Overview

Returns prepared, and the year planned before it closes

A tax return is a record of decisions that have already been made. By the time it is on the desk in March, the entity choice, the retirement contributions, the timing of a large purchase and the estimated payments are all fixed. Most of what a preparer can do at that point is report accurately.

That is why the planning sits in front of the preparation here, not after it. We look at the prior two or three years first, because that is where the pattern is, and then at what is still open in the current year.

Entity selection and whether your current one still fits. Reasonable compensation for S corporation owners. Retirement plan choices, which are often the largest single lever available to a profitable owner. Timing on equipment and vehicle purchases. Estimated payments sized so you are not financing the IRS or being penalized by it.

For New York filers there is a local layer that catches people out. If you run an unincorporated business in the city, the Unincorporated Business Tax applies at 4% on income allocated to New York City. The filing threshold is gross business income above $95,000, there is a $5,000 exemption against net income, and a credit eliminates the tax entirely where it comes to $3,400 or less. Holding, leasing or managing real property for rent is specifically outside it, so rental property on its own does not create UBT, and S corporations fall under the Business Corporation Tax instead.

The Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax is the other one. For the self-employed the threshold was $50,000 for tax years 2025 and earlier, and rises to $150,000 for 2026 onward, computed per individual per zone even on a joint return. A lot of people drop out of it this year without realizing.

Problems we fix

What usually brings people to this work

These cost money quietly, and they get more expensive the longer they sit.

A number you did not see coming

A large bill or a large refund both mean nobody modeled the year before December.

Your last preparer is gone

Nobody can explain the positions taken, and the carryforwards arrive without a history.

Estimates taken from last year

Last year divided by four works until income moves, and then it stops working.

Years that were never filed

Penalties compound and the options narrow the longer a return sits unfiled.

Who it is for

Who uses tax preparation and planning

If you recognize yourself in one of these, a short call is usually enough to tell whether this is the right service.

Business owners

S corporations, partnerships and LLCs that need the return and the books to agree.

Self-employed filers

Schedule C income, with the deductions documented rather than assumed.

Property owners

Rental income across one property or several, including East End seasonal rentals.

Anyone with a complicated year

A sale, a move between states, equity compensation, or income in more than one country.

How it works

How tax preparation and planning runs

Four stages. Most of the value sits in the first two, before anything is filed.

  1. Read the last few returns

Prior returns show the missed elections, the defensive positions and whether the entity still fits.

  2. Confirm the records

A return is only as good as the trial balance sitting behind it.

  3. Plan before year end

Entity, compensation, retirement and timing decisions, while they can still change the number.

  4. File and stay reachable

Returns prepared and filed, and someone who answers in August when a notice turns up.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the right time to switch accountants?

Any time other than April. Moving mid-year gives us room to fix the books and act on what we find before the year closes. Moving in filing season means we file what already happened and start planning for next year.

Can you file returns for previous years I missed?

Yes. Prior-year and delinquent returns are routine. Filing voluntarily before the IRS contacts you nearly always produces a better outcome than waiting, both on penalties and on what options remain open.

Do you handle crypto?

Yes, including exchange activity, staking and the reporting that follows. Bring whatever transaction history you can export. Reconstructing it later costs more than keeping it as you go.

I live outside New York City but work in Manhattan. What do I owe the city?

As a nonresident, no New York City resident income tax. The nonresident earnings tax was repealed in 1999 and the partial version was struck down in 2000. But if you carry on an unincorporated business within the city, the Unincorporated Business Tax can still apply regardless of where you live. Westchester residents with city clients are the usual case.

Do you do foreign income and FBAR?

Yes. Foreign income, international reporting and FBAR filings for foreign accounts. The penalties for missing an FBAR are disproportionate to the effort of filing one, so it is worth checking even if you think you are under the threshold.
