In Yonkers

Tax preparation and planning for Yonkers

Residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of net state tax. Nonresidents who work in the city pay an earnings tax instead. The line between the two is where most Yonkers returns go wrong, particularly for people who moved in or out mid year.

It is a small tax with a long memory, and the notices for getting it wrong arrive years later.

Local tax

The only local income tax outside the city

This is the detail that makes Yonkers different from everywhere else we work. Residents pay a Yonkers income tax surcharge of 16.75% of the net state tax amount. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a nonresident earnings tax of 0.50%, filed on Form Y-203. No other area we cover outside New York City has a municipal income tax at all; Scarsdale, four miles away, has none.

What you do not pay is just as important. There is no New York City resident income tax for Yonkers residents, including the large commuter population. The nonresident earnings tax that used to apply was repealed in 1999 and the partial version was struck down in 2000. MCTMT sits in Zone 2 at 0.34% rather than the city’s 0.60%, and with the self employment threshold moving from $50,000 to $150,000 for 2026, a lot of self employed Yonkers filers leave that tax entirely this year.

The combination worth understanding: a Yonkers resident consultant with New York City clients can face state tax, the 16.75% Yonkers surcharge and New York City Unincorporated Business Tax on the city sourced business, while owing no New York City resident tax. All three can be true at once, and almost nobody explains it.

With a substantial two to four family and apartment stock and a majority renting, small landlord Schedule E work is common here, and unlike Brooklyn there is no UBT to think about. Proximity to Connecticut and New Jersey makes multi state filing and the resident credit on Form IT-112-R routine.

How it works

How tax preparation and planning runs

Four stages. Most of the value sits in the first two, before anything is filed.

  1. Read the last few returns

Prior returns show the missed elections, the defensive positions and whether the entity still fits.

  2. Confirm the records

A return is only as good as the trial balance sitting behind it.

  3. Plan before year end

Entity, compensation, retirement and timing decisions, while they can still change the number.

  4. File and stay reachable

Returns prepared and filed, and someone who answers in August when a notice turns up.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Yonkers tax?

For residents it is a surcharge of 16.75% of your net New York State tax, so it scales with your state liability rather than being a separate rate on income. If you work in Yonkers but live elsewhere, it is a 0.50% earnings tax on the Yonkers sourced wages, filed on Form Y-203.

I live in Yonkers and work in Manhattan. Do I pay New York City tax?

No. The city commuter tax was repealed in 1999 and struck down for everyone in 2000. You pay state tax and the Yonkers resident surcharge. If you also run an unincorporated business carried on within the city, the city Unincorporated Business Tax can still apply to that business.

Is the casino coming to Yonkers?

No. MGM withdrew the Empire City bid for a downstate casino license in October 2025, and the three licenses went to Resorts World Queens, Bally’s Bronx and Metropolitan Park. Empire City continues to operate as a video lottery racino at Yonkers Raceway. It is worth saying because a lot of older material still assumes otherwise.

When is the right time to switch accountants?

Any time other than April. Moving mid-year gives us room to fix the books and act on what we find before the year closes. Moving in filing season means we file what already happened and start planning for next year.

Can you file returns for previous years I missed?

Yes. Prior-year and delinquent returns are routine. Filing voluntarily before the IRS contacts you nearly always produces a better outcome than waiting, both on penalties and on what options remain open.

Do you handle crypto?

Yes, including exchange activity, staking and the reporting that follows. Bring whatever transaction history you can export. Reconstructing it later costs more than keeping it as you go.

I live outside New York City but work in Manhattan. What do I owe the city?

As a nonresident, no New York City resident income tax. The nonresident earnings tax was repealed in 1999 and the partial version was struck down in 2000. But if you carry on an unincorporated business within the city, the Unincorporated Business Tax can still apply regardless of where you live. Westchester residents with city clients are the usual case.

Do you do foreign income and FBAR?

Yes. Foreign income, international reporting and FBAR filings for foreign accounts. The penalties for missing an FBAR are disproportionate to the effort of filing one, so it is worth checking even if you think you are under the threshold.
